Way back in 2001, a little company called Harmonix Music Systems devised a new way to bring rhythmic hardcore to PS2 gamers: Frequency, whereas a song gets mixed together by hitting buttons to the beat.
However, as opposed to merely going through one chart of notes, the player has to go through anywhere through five to eight of them, depending on how varied the instrumentation/vocals of the song in question are.
Frequency's songlist was primarily techno in nature, but also had some industrial/tech-metal to add a little diversity, but all in all, the variety was very electronic in nature; which is seldomly a bad thing when dealing with rhythm games.
Also, quite a few songs in the top tiers of difficulty were composed by the Harmonix Funky Beats crew, foremost among whom is the eclectically-musical DJ Kasson Crooker, also a member of Freezepop, and a composer of many different tracks under aliases such as Symbion Project, Komputer Kontroller, DJ HMX, et cetera.
